Having just completed a 2000 word report on A/D conversion, nearly half of which being taken up by a discussion of dither, the thing that I find mildly disturbing is that there are genuinely people out there in the world who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of the perfect pseudo-random noise signal - whether to use rectangular, triangular or gaussian probability density functions? Is it best to use subtractive or non-subtractive dithering? Should the noise be ‘coloured’ so that most of the energy is in the high-frequency content? (Answers: triangular, normally; subtractive if you can, but normally it’s impractical; you should use coloured noise ONLY if it’s the last time the audio will be processed)
How do they carry on?
